The Gambeson Coat is comprised of high-quality cotton fibres and moves freely. Raw cotton pads and cotton linen are utilised for added comfort, breathability, and durability. This armour was worn as a full suit of armour as well as beneath mail and plate to cushion the body and prevent chafing. It was not used beneath armour until the mid-twelfth century. It was quite insulating and hence uncomfortable, but the soldier needed the protection.
