A gambeson is a cushioned defensive garment that may be worn alone or beneath mail or plate armour. The Gambeson Coat is comprised of high-quality 100% cotton fibres and moves freely. Raw cotton pads and cotton linen are utilised for added comfort, breathability, and durability.

Gambeson shirts are a necessity if you want to wear steel plate or chainmail armour. They are comfortable to wear on their own, with fabric-covered buttons made of horn, bone, or wood from the early mediaeval period on the elbow pads. The gambeson does not overheat during intense training and competitions.

This armour was worn as a full suit as well as beneath mail and plate to cushion the body and prevent chafing. It was not used beneath armour until the mid-twelfth century. Although it was quite insulating and hence uncomfortable, the soldier needed the protection.
