The gambeson is a cushioned defensive garment that may be worn alone or beneath mail or plate armour. Comprised of high-quality cotton fibres, the Gambeson Coat moves freely and utilises raw cotton pads and cotton linen for added comfort, breathability, and durability.

While the gambeson was primarily used for military purposes, it was also sometimes worn by civilians for protection during travel or work. Today, gambesons are popular among reenactors and historical enthusiasts.

Suitable for those who wish to wear steel plate or chainmail armour, gambeson shirts are a necessity, providing a comfortable base layer. The elbow pads feature fabric-covered buttons made of horn, bone, or wood from the early medieval period, and the garment does not overheat during intense training and competitions.

This armour was worn as a full suit as well as beneath mail and plate to cushion the body and prevent chafing. It was not used beneath armour until the mid-twelfth century and was quite insulating, though the soldier needed the protection it provided.
